UPANISHAD VAHINI92ISAVASYOPANISHADThe Lord, intent on the regeneration of theworld, communicated Vedas throughHiranya-garbha. Then, Hiranyagarbha, inturn, passed them on to His Ten Manasaputhras (Sonsborn out of the mind) including Athri and Marichi. Fromthem, the Vedas spread among humanity, handed downfrom one generation to another. As time passed, agesaccumulated and continents moved. Some Vedas got lost,or were neglected as too difficult for comprehension andonly Four have survived into modern times. These Fourwere taught by Vedavyasa, the greatest among theexponents of the Vedas, to his disciples in the DwaparaYuga (The era in which the Divine and the demoniacelements were in the same kingdom).
10 UPANISHAD VAHINIWhen Vyasa was thus expounding the Vedas,engaged in spreading the sacred scripture, one discipleof his, Yajnavalkya by name, incurred his wrath and as apunishment, he had to regurgitate the Yajur Veda that hehad already learned, into the custody of his guru andleave the place to take refuge in Suryadeva, the treasurehouseof the Vedas. Just then, the Rishis who revere theVedas, flew into the place in the shape of Thiththiri birdsand ate up the regurgitated Yajur Veda. That particularsection of the Veda is called “Thaithiriyam.”Meanwhile, Suryadeva was pleased with thedevotion and steadfastness of the unfortunateYajnavalkya. He assumed the form of a Vaji or Horseand blessed the sage with renewed knowledge of the YajurVeda. The sections thus taught by the Vaji came to becalled ‘Vajasaneyi.’ The Yajur Veda as promoted byVedavyasa is called Krishnayajur Veda and that handeddown by Yajnavalkya as the Suklayajur Veda.In these, the first few chapters are Manthrasconnected with the Karma Kanda and the last fewsections deal with Jnana Kanda. The IsavasyaUpanishad is concerned with this Jnana Kanda. Since theopening manthra of this Upanishad starts with the words,‘Isavasyam,’ the Upanishad is called by that name.
