UPANISHAD VAHINI173KATHOPANISHADThe story of Nachiketha, who was initiatedin spiritual discipline by Yama Himself, isfound in this Upanishad. The same storyis also mentioned in the Thaithiriya Brahmana and in theMahabharatha too, in the 106th Chapter of theAnusasanaparva. This Upanishad has become famouson account of its clarity and depth of imagination. Manyof the thoughts expressed in it can be found in theBhagavad Gita. Since it belongs to the Katha Saakha ofthe Krishna Yajur Veda School, it is called Kathopanishad.A very strict ritualist, Vaajasravas, also known asGouthama, performed a Yaga (Sacrifice). As part of thesacrifice he gave away cows that were no longer able toeat grass or drink water, much less yield milk! They weretoo old for any useful purpose. Seeing this, his virtuousand intelligent son, Nachiketha by name, realised that his
18 UPANISHAD VAHINIfather was in for a great deal of sorrow, as a consequenceof the sinful gifts. The boy wanted to save his fatherfrom his fate as far as it lay in his power. So, he askedhis father, to whom he intended to offer him as a gift!He importuned that he too should be given away tosomeone. At this the father got so incensed that he shoutedin disgust, “I am giving you to the God of Death.” Atthis he resolved that his father’s words must not befalsified though they were uttered in the Jiva Loka, infectedwith birth and death. So he persuaded his father to offerhim, in strict ritualistic style, as a gift to Yama. Nachikethapromptly proceeded to the abode of the God of Death.He had to wait three nights before he could see Yama.Yama felt sorry for the delay and promised Nachikethathree boons, one for each night he spent outside his doors.Nachiketha wanted first, that when he returned tohis native place and home at His behest, his father mustwelcome him gladly, bereft of all anger at his formerimpertinence, and full of mental equanimity. His seconddesire was to know the secret of the absence in heavenof hunger or thirst or the fear of death. Yama gladly gavehim these boons. In addition Yama initiated him into aspecial ritual, and its Mystery. Nachiketha listenedreverentially and grasped the details of that ritual quicklyand clearly. Yama was so delighted with his new disciplethat He gave the Yaga a new name, Nachiketha Agni!This was an extra boon for the young visitor. Nachiketha
