UPANISHAD VAHINI27This knowledge has been handed down fromteacher to pupil by word of mouth, enriched andconfirmed by experience. It is also called Paravidya, theknowledge of the Other when it deals with the attributelessPrinciple. When it deals with the attribute-full, the Saguna, the materialised Principle, it is called Aparavidya, theknowledge of the Immanent, not the Transcendent aspect. These are the two that are found in this Upanishad. Theywere taught by Saunaka to Angirasa. That is what thetext announces. The Vedas and the Vedangas deal withAparavidya. The Upanishads deal specifically withParavidya. But the interesting thing is: the Aparavidyaleads on to the Para, the knowledge of Brahmam, whichis the goal. The spider evolves out of itself the magnificentmanifestation of the web. So too, this jagath (moving, changing world) is manifested from the causativeBrahmam. The jagath or samsar is the product of creatorcreationcomplex. It is true and factual and useful, solong as one is unaware of the Reality. The utmost thatone can gain by activity, that is to say holy or sacredactivity, is Heaven or Swarga, which has a longer leaseof life, but which has an end in spite of it. So, the seekerloses all yearning for Heaven. He approaches an elderlyteacher full of compassion, who instructs him in thediscipline for realising the Brahmam.
