UPANISHAD VAHINI43Scholars have designated the first two sections ofthis Text as Madhura Kanda, the next two as Muni Kandaand the last two as Khila Kanda. Khila means appendixand hence the name is appropriate. The first section dealswith the basic principles, as they are. The second provestheir truth by reference to experience. The third showshow to practise the same and get mastery over it. Thefirst section teaches Jnana, essential for spiritual progress;it is related to the paths of Karma and Upasana. It is notmere dry intellectual discipline. For those eager to earn Jnana, there are fourinstruments or media for acquiring this wisdom. Theyare: Pada, Bija, Sankhya and Rekha. Pada means theVedas, and the Smrithis that attempt to explain them.Bija connotes the entire gamut of manthras learnt directlyfrom the Guru. Sankhya is of two kinds, Vaidika andLoukika. Vaidika-sankhya means the calculations andquantitative analysis of the various manthras. Loukikasankhyarefers to the numbers and their interrelations sofar as they are related to the external world and theinterrelations of human activities. Rekha too has two suchcategories, the Vaidika-Rekha being a part of the Upasanaactivity mentioned in the Vedas and Loukika-Rekhabeing the part of the Mathematics of the Universe. The Madhura Kanda describes the Brahmathathwaor the Brahmam Principle in the light of thecategories accepted as authoritative by the Scriptures.
