76 <strong>UPANISHAD</strong> <strong>VAHINI</strong>but the equal of ordinary men and his fate is the same asthat of the Ajnani. The Chiththa has to be saturated withBrahmic endeavour. Then only will it be an instrumentof Liberation, freed from the shackles of Sankalpa. Themind etc., cannot free itself, as the Chiththa can. TheChiththa discriminates between resolutions. It tests themas duty and not-duty, and justifies with proper reasonsthe classification it has made. Once this selection is made,the word utters it, the name signifies it. The special soundformsor manthras incorporate the resolutions, acceptedas duty, by the purified Chiththa; the rites become onewith the manthras. There can be no proper Karma withoutChiththa.Next, about Dhyana, which is even superior toChiththa. Dhyana is the fixing of the Buddhi on theDivine, when it transcends such inferior helps as images,idols or saligrams. In Dhyana, all agitations cease, allmodifications are unnoticed. On account of the effect ofthe Thamo Guna, and even of the Rajo Guna, all createdthings like the waters, the hills and mountains, the starsand planets, men with the spark of the Divine in them, allare agitation-bound, change-bound.Vijnana is better than Dhyana. Jnana based onscholarship steeped in the Sastras is referred to asVijnana. It is attained by Dhyana and, hence, it is morevaluable than Dhyana.
