62 <strong>UPANISHAD</strong> <strong>VAHINI</strong>8KENOPANISHADThe Kenopanishad is ascribed to Sama Vedaand its Thalavakara branch and hence it isalso referred to as the Thalavakaropanishad.The name Kena is derived from the first word ofthe stanza of the first section of the Upanishad:“Keneshitham pathathi preshitham manah, Kenapraanah prathamah praithityuktah, keneshithaamvacham imam vadanthi, chakshuhsrothram kaudevoyunakthi?” “Who impels the mind to alight on its object?Enjoined by whom does the vital force proceed tofunction? At whose behest do men utter speech? Whatintelligence, indeed, directs the eyes and the ears?”The ear, skin, eye, tongue, nose—these five sensesare able to cognise sound, touch, form, taste and smellrespectively.
