<strong>UPANISHAD</strong> <strong>VAHINI</strong>15the condemnation of the Avidya (ignorance) whichprevents the understanding of the Atma.Thus the Isavasya teaches the lesson ofrenunciation through the first manthra and the lesson of“liberating activity” through Karma devoid of Raga(passion, attachment) and Dwesha (anger, hate, repulsion)in the second manthra. In the fourth and fifth manthra, itspeaks of Atmathatwa (Faith in the Lord) and later ofthe fruits of the knowledge of that Atmathatwa. In theninth manthra, the path of progressive liberation orKarmamukthi (useful for those who are too weak to followthe path of total renunciation but who are adepts in actsthat are conducive to moral development and innerpurification) is laid down. This is the path which coordinatesall Karma on the principle of Upasana (worshipor contemplation of God). Those who are engaged inacts contrary to Vidya (Knowledge) are full of Ajnana(Ignorance), it says. Those who confine themselves tothe study and practice of divine forms are even worse,for their desire is for powers and skills. Vidya leads toDeva Loka; Karma leads to Pithr Loka, it is said. So theJnana that results in Atma sakshathkara or Self-realisationis something quite distinct from these.
