Physical OceanographyCHAPTER4Caroly Shumway, Kevin Ruddock, and Melissa ClarkIntroductionThis chapter provides an overviewof the large-scale physical processesoccurring in the NorthwestAtlantic. Oceanographic processesare important predictors of marinespecies distribution and abundance,from phytoplankton to predatorypelagic fish to whales. For example,variation in seawater density (thecombination of temperature andsalinity) is one of the major factorsgoverning large scale circulationpatterns on the United StatesEast Coast (Epifanio and Garvine2001). The influence of theLabrador Current and terrestrialfreshwater sources along the coast causes water on the Continental Shelf to be generally cooler and fresher than waterbeyond the Continental Slope, which is more influenced by the Gulf Stream. These two distinct water masses meet atthe shelf break front, which can be a barrier to exchange of nutrients and plankton (Townsend et al. 2006). The interrelationshipbetween oceanographic processes and structural features, such as the shelf-slope break or seamounts, leadsto distinctive habitats for a range of species (Roff and Evans 2002). Note that the chapter does not address finerscalecurrent patterns along the coast, which play a role in larval settlement and correspondingly, marine connectivity(Epifanio and Garvine 2001).
