Each participanthad a medical examination, achest x-ray, a Snellen eye test, anaudiometer test, and went through thecancer detection center in Durham.Continuous evaluation by staff andparticipants was another valuable experience.This helped to keep the plans"up-to-date" to meet the needs of theparticipants.Near the end of the session a periodwas spent in discussing the ways ofworking "back home." This discussionrevealed that each participant had concreteplans for improving the healthprogram in his school and community.With the interest and enthusiasm exhibitedby these participants at theend of six weeks and with their competenciesin recognizing and solvinghealth problems, the hope for betterhealth will no doubt be realized formore children in North Carolina.REPORT OF MEDICAL AND DENTAL EXAMINATIONSIN BEAUFORT, IREDELL AND SWAIN COUNTIESBy Charles E. Spencer, DirectorMrs. Annie Ray Moore, Health EducatorSchool Health Coordinating ServiceRaleigh, North CarolinaMedical and dental examinations weregiven in Beaufort, Iredell and Swaincounties as a part of a "Survey of PublicEducation" made by the Departmentof Public Instruction vmder the directionof Dr. Allen S. Hurlburt. TheSchool Health Coordinating Service participatedin the study in those phasesof the school program relating to thehealth of children. The survey on thehealth phase of the school program inBeaufort County, Washington City, IredellCovmty, Mooresville, Statesville andSwam County was made on 9th gradestudents, one-quarter of the students ingrades 10, 11 and 12 and in the 8thgrade in some schools. In addition tomedical and dental examinations thesame groups were given a health knowledgetest and questionnaire of healthhabits.The medical and dental examinationswere carried out by state and local personnelas follows:1. Medical examinations were made byprivate physicians and health officers.2. Dental examinations were made bydentists of the Division of the StateBoard of Health.3. Audiometer tests were made bylocal audiometer technicians.4. Stool examinations and urinalysiswere made by public health nurses,technicians and the State Laboratoryof Hygiene.5. Snellen eye testing, measuring ofheight and weight were done byteachers.The final report of the "Survey onPublic Education," which will be published,will give the number and percentageof children found to have thefollowing defects— skin, scalp, vision,hearing, nose, mouth, teeth, glands,chest and lungs, heart, hernia, genitalia,orthopedic neurological, hookworm, otherintestinal parasites, urinalysis, hemoglobinand throat (tonsils).
