16 The Health Bulletin January, 1951his private office in Wilmington. Thepublication continued regularly until hisdeath in August, 1892.Not long ago, the editor had the privilegeof visiting in the home where Dr.Wood's two daughters, Misses Jane andMargaret Wood still live. They showedthe editor the very room from whichthe Bulletin was issued through theyears, from April, 1886 until his deathin August, 1892. They informed the editorthat Dr. Wood had associated withhim a young physician at that time bythe name of Dr. Robert Jewett who assistedhim in doing some of the writingand the routine work of the office. Theysaid that Dr. Jewett was still living inretirement at his home on GreenvilleSound in New Hanover Coiinty. OnMay 6, the Associated Press announcedfrom Wilmington that Dr. Jewett haddied that morning at the age of 79.As stated above, the Health Bvilletinwas founded by Dr. Wood and his advisersamong the membership of theState Board of Health. With just a fewalterations, the size and general appearanceof the publication is the sametoday as it was the first issue. It isslightly larger and about twenty yearsago, the present management of theHealth Bulletin made some improvementsin the title page and In page 3,which has been carried as changed eversince.Dr. Wood was made Secretary andthe first State Health Officer followingthe creation of the State Board ofHealth by the Legislatvure in 1877. Dr.Wood was at that time practicing medicinein Wilmington. He was coming tobe a botanist of national reputationwhich he carried on as a hobby. He hadalso founded and conducted for severalyears up to that time the North CarolinaMedical Journal, now known asSouthern Medicine and Surgery andpublished in Charlotte. Sometime afterDr. Wood's death. Dr. Jewett obtainedcontrol of the North Carolina MedicalforJournal and owned and published itsome foiu" or five years, when it wassold to Dr. Dickson Register, a native ofDuplin County who was practicingmedicine in Charlotte and coming to beat that time a widely known physician.At Dr. Wood's death, however, Dr. R.H. Lewis of Raleigh succeeded him asSecretary and State Health Officer andimmediately moved the office of the IState Board of Health from Wilmington.to Raleigh. The Bulletin has been issuedmonthly from Raleigh ever since. Dr.Wood and Dr. Lewis were both, ofcourse, part time State Health Officers.The two of them combined served formore than thirty years in the office.The first announcement of the publicationof the Health Bulletin wasmade at the Conjoint Session of theNorth Carolina State Board of Healthand the North Carolina State MedicalSociety at New Bern on May 20, 1886.Dr. J. W. Jones of Tarboro was presidentof the North Carolina State Boardof Health and in his annual report t»the Conjoint Session made the officialannouncement of the founding of theHealth Btilletin in the following languagequoted from the transactions of theNorth Carolina State Medical Societyfor that year. The record of the HealthBulletin for the following fifty yearsmust accord to Dr. Jones a place asa major prophet. But with what sacrificein time and labor only a few menknow!Dr. Jones: "Gentlemen of the MedicalSociety and the State Board of Health:Prom time to time and little by little,we have gotten the ports of the NorthCarolina Board of Health together. Weoccupy it. It is in motion ...."The North Carolina Board of Health,organized and equipped in all it departments(a part time State Health Officer,a part time stenographer, and a totalannual appropriation of $2,000!—Editor),with a monthly Bulletin of Health,through which we may communicate,correspond, and instruct, unites in ConjointSession with the North CarolinaMedical Society, to exchange views andpurpose plans that shall best advanceour common work of making our peoplehealthier, happier, wealthier and wiser.
