We assume that the symbolswhich occur in the field of the Athenian tetradrachmsof this time are connected with one of thethree names of magistrates.2It cannot be connectedwith the third name, which may vary as often as adozen times in the year, while the symbol remainsthe same. Now all the coins with the name ofAntiochus bear the elephant;but on some of thesethe second magistrateisNiKoy(o?s), on othersKa/scuxos. From this it follows that the elephantmust be the symbol of Antiochus, unless (whichishighly improbable)itrepresents yet a fourthperson.The letter Z on the oil-amphora marks this coin ashaving been issued in the sixth month of the year.The letters A below the amphora probably indicatethe particular officina of the mint in which the coinwas produced.
