HISTORICAL GREEK COINSso that we are not surprised to find the standardin Cyprus and, for a short time, in Egypt. Thecoins had a very wide currency, and some of thelater silver was actually in circulation in 71 A. D., foran inscription of that date tariffs Rhodian drachmsat 10 assaria, or 1f of the denarius. And they havealways been plentiful in the Levant ;which accountsfor the curious fact that, out of the fifteenor twenty coins which are known to have beenpreserved in various Christian churches as relics ofthe Betrayal of Christ ('Judas-Pennies '),at leasteight were Rhodian coins of the fourth century B.C. 2ANTI-SPARTAN LEAGUE AFTER THE BATTLE OFCNIDUS (394-389 B.C.)32. HISTOKICAL GREEK COINSof Sambs, belong to a small group which alsoincludes coins of Cnidus, lasos, Rhodes and Byzantium. From their style these pieces must bejudged to belong to the beginning of the fourthcentury and they furnish undoubted evidence of;the combination of these cities in a league. Theonly political circumstances suitable for such acoinage in the early fourth century are found inthe period immediately succeeding Conon's victoryat Cnidus, when there was a general uprisingagainst Sparta. 1The issue of Cnidus is distinguished by the headof the Cnidian Aphrodite, and the inscriptionKNIAIAN ;at lasos we have the head of Apollo andI A ;at Rhodes, a rose and PO at ;Byzantium, a bullstanding on a dolphin and Y'V (Bu). 2having as their common typeAll agree inthe infant Heraclesstrangling the snakes, in the inscription 2!YN(/i,a^t-KOV), S and in the weight, which is that of threedrachms of the Bhodian standard. In addition tothese coins with YN, the same type makes its appearanceat about the same time at Thebes, 4 Croton, 51The historical significance of this group of coins was first pointed outby Waddington. On the date of the league, see F. H. Marshall, SecondAthenian Confederacy, p. 3, note 2.2Head, B. M. C. Caria, PI. xiv. 9 (Cnidus) and PI. xlv. 2 (Rhodes) ;Imhoof-Blumer, Mown. Or., PI. F. 6 (lasos). My attention was calledby Dr. H. von Fritze to the hitherto unknown Byzantine coin, which hassince been exhaustively dealt with by Dr. Regling (loc.cit.).3Cp.
