HISTORICAL GREEK COINS1Magnesia, Lebedus, and Myrina. Priene itself hasbeen suggested, the owl that appears in the fieldof the coin being regarded as a mint-mark for an;owl on an olive-branch is one of the types found onPrienian bronze coins. It is true that the owlafter all, a natural type wherever there was a cultof Athena occurs at other Ionian cities, such asLebedus and Heracleia ad Latmum. But, in viewof the history of Orophernes, Priene certainly seemsthe most probable mint. We may note furtheron a round basis. It isthat the owl is standingprobably, therefore, the representation of a particularfigureof an owl, dedicated, we may suppose, insome temple of Athena. It is difficult to abstainfrom the conjecture that Orophernes dedicated afigure of an owl in the temple to which he afterwardsgaveits cultus-statue, and that when his coinswere struck for him at Priene that owl was used atonce as a mint-mark, and as an allusion to theking's gift to the Prienian sanctuary. On the motif of the crowning of the king's name, see above, No. 71.THE REVOLT OF ANDBISCUS150-149 B.c.87.
