Transportation Staff: prepare your passengers. In areas with earthquake risk, we have practiced “Drop, Cover <strong>and</strong> Hold” <strong>and</strong> vehicleevacuation with your students. All passengers know that they must act in accordance with driver’s instructions.Transportation Staff: prepare your parents <strong>and</strong> caregivers. Parents have been reminded that in case of emergency during the commute, I willtake children to the nearest school.Transportation Staff: during earthquake shaking, I know that I will: Stop the bus away from power lines, bridges, overpasses, buildings, possible l<strong>and</strong>slideconditions, overhanging trees, or other dangerous situations. (Beware thatshaking may be mistaken <strong>for</strong> a tire blow-out) Instruct students to “Drop, Cover <strong>and</strong> Hold On”, <strong>and</strong> take comm<strong>and</strong>. Set brake, turn off ignition, <strong>and</strong> wait <strong>for</strong> the shaking to stop.<strong>Disaster</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Preparedness</strong>: <strong>Guidance</strong> <strong>for</strong> SchoolsTransportation Staff: following earthquake, <strong>and</strong> in case of other hazards, I know that I will: Check <strong>for</strong> <strong>and</strong> attend to injuries. Report <strong>and</strong> record injuries. Evacuate the bus in the event of a fire. Not attempt to cross any damaged bridges or overpasses or drive through anyflooded streets or roads. Use radio to notify Transportation Dispatch of your location <strong>and</strong> receive instructionsif possible. If it is safe to continue, proceed by vehicle or on foot to the nearest school. Notify school site incident comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> provide them with students’ emergencycontact <strong>and</strong> emergency medical in<strong>for</strong>mation. Remain with the children until further instructions are provided from the incidentcomm<strong>and</strong>er or Transportation Dispatch.Transportation Staff: protecting students in case of disaster or emergency I underst<strong>and</strong> that I may release students only to: Parents or guardians or those listed on <strong>Emergency</strong> Contact List, who properlyidentify themselves (retain copy of Student/Family Reunification Form). Medical care facility providers (document status <strong>and</strong> destination). School principal, site manager, teacher, or transportation official. Public safety authorities. I underst<strong>and</strong> that I may need to improvise <strong>and</strong> make independent decisions, dependingon the emergencies, age of children, location of bus <strong>and</strong> so <strong>for</strong>th.58
