V-Seals and ExcludersEngineeringCatalog EPS 5350/USADesign EngineeringThe flexible construction of the lipand hinge of the V-Seal allows it totolerate a certain amount of runout, shaft to bore misalignment andeccentricity. Centrifugal force producesa decrease in contact pressure of thelip as speed increases, keepingfrictional losses and heat to a minimum. The result is excellent wearcharacteristics and extended seal life. AV-Seal will not “groove” the shaft.Figure 12-1. V-Seal against bearinghousing.Design FeaturesClipper V-Seals are stretched over the shaft and mountedagainst a counterface. V-Seals can be installed over flanges, pulleys and housings without dismantling (see Figure 12-1).The DS design is press fit onto the shaft and is usedalone or in conjunction with a conventional radial lip seal toenhance seal performance. The DS design is used to deflectinternal heavy oil surge (see Figure 12-2) and can be usedexternally to deflect dust and spray. The DS features the traditional Clipper nonmetalliccomposite construction for stability and performance. The SSW excluder is similar to V-Seals, except the seal ispress fit on the shaft for heavy duty applications. The SSWexcluder rotates with the shaft and seals against thecounterface (see Figure 12-3). This face-sealing actionmakes the SSW a necessary part of any conventional radialseal application where severe abrasive particles, dust orexternal spray are present. SSW excluders are used to protectthe primary seal. The SSW features the traditional nonmetallic compositeconstruction for stability and performance.Figure 12-2.
