Catalog EPS 5350/USAEngineeringBearing IsolatorsGeneral Theory of OperationEngineered labyrinth type seals, also called“Bearing Isolators,” should be considered whenincreasing the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)is a primary objective for seal selection. Commonequipment that uses labyrinth-type seals includesANSI pumps, IEEE 841 rated electric motors, splitpillow block bearings, turbines and gearboxes.All bearing isolator designs consist of at leasta rotor and a stator. An external O-ring at the statorOD maintains a press fit in the seal housing andprovides a static seal for oil retention. The O-ringpress fit allows for easy seal installation while alsoproviding excellent bore retention. The press fit willwithstand external forces to eliminate movementor spinning in the housing and has even beentested in the vertical down position to ensurethe stator will not walk out of the seal bore.Double Groove22Severe Splash GrooveProTech StatorThe stator has a series of internal grooves toretain oil splash and return it to the sump. BeforeProTech ® seal designs were introduced, bearingisolators relied on a single inboard groove for oilretention.To improve lubricant retention capability,Parker offers a double groove and a severe splashdesign. The double groove design works well forgrease and mild oil splash. Parker developed andintroduced the severe splash design forapplications where oil splash is heavy. The severesplash design is also used in applications whereoutboard mounted fans are present and are pullingthe lubricant through a simple groove design.Types “LS”, “LN” and “LB” feature a double groove.A severe oil splash groove is standard on types“LW”, “LX”, “ML” and “MN”.An outboard drain port is machined in thestator. Contaminants that enter the assembledseal are expelled through this drain port. Duringinstallation it is imperative that the drain port iscentered at the 6 o’clock position.
