Mercy Delta Express
The Mercy Delta Express Mobile Clinic was
initiated in 2003, and provides healthcare services
in underserved areas of the Delta.
The van, which includes a state-of-the-art
clinical exam room and dental chair, was donated
by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Vicksburg,
Mississippi, to support an initiative of UMMC’s
School of Nursing.
A one-stop shop for medical check-ups, immunizations,
prescription renewals, dental exams
and a host of other medical services, the Delta Express
is served by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare
providers, social workers, pharmacists, and
educators who provide services to those who might
not otherwise receive necessary healthcare.
The mobile clinic program started in the
Mississippi Delta’s Issaquena County, but has expanded
its services to include other Delta counties
as well. Last year, partnering with more than 20 dentists
from the Delta, healthcare professionals provided
oral health screenings for second-graders in
25 area elementary schools.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the
van served as a base camp for the more than 2,000
evacuees staying in the Mississippi Coliseum.
Sharon Wyatt, RN, CANP, PhD, FAAN, is
the Harriet Williamson Professor of Nephrology
Nursing in UMMC’s School of Nursing and a professor
in the Department of Medicine. Speaking
about the Mercy Delta Express, Wyatt noted, “We
knew there was a desperate need for this type of
service—especially because of the very rural nature
of the Delta. Its impact has been amazing, and underscores
the problems associated with a lack of access
to healthcare,” she said.
Willie Dixon
Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1915.
Often called “the poet laureate of the
blues,” he wrote several hits recorded by
Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. Bestknown

Sam Cooke
Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1931. He
was credited with integrating gospel, blues,
and classic soul, and had 29 top-forty hits
to his credit. Best-known works include
You Send Me, Twistin’ the Night Away,
Chain Gang, and Having a Party.
Bo Diddley
Born Otha Ellas Bates in McComb, Mississippi
in 1928 (and later changed his name
to Ellas McDaniel Diddley). Considered an
R&B legend, his best-known works include
Who Do You Love?, Road Runner, Mona,
Before You Accuse Me, and I’m a Man.
Elmore James
Born in Richland, Mississippi in 1918.
Credited with inventing blues rock, he was
known especially for his unique style in
playing the guitar. Best-known works include
Dust My Broom, Shake Your Money
Maker, Talk to Me Baby, and The Sky is
Crying.
