An accomplished investigator in nuclear receptors,
Jose Subauste, MD, serves as program director
for the endocrine fellowship training
program. He provides consultative services at the
Endocrine and Lipid Clinic at the G.V. (“Sonny”)
Montgomery Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center.
Subauste is principal investigator of the federallyfunded
study, “Dimerization and Dominant Negative
Activity of v-erbA.”
Elise Gomez-Sanchez, DVM, PhD, a basic
researcher, is involved in the teaching curriculum of
both the division and UMMC’s integrated neuroscience
graduate program. She is principal investigator
of the NIH grant, “Adrenal Decommissioning
and Hypertension,” and the VA Merit Review grant,
“Localization of Mineralocorticoid Action in the
Brain and Hypertension.” She chaired this year’s International
Aldosterone Conference and serves as a
member of the Endocrine Society’s Ethics Committee.
She is a fellow of the American Heart Association’s
Council for High Blood Pressure Research
and serves on the editorial boards of Hypertension
and Endocrinology. Gomez-Sanchez is a member of
the NIH Hypertension and Microcirculation Study
Section and an ad hoc reviewer for the NIH STRB
Study Section and the VA Merit Review Subcommittee
for Endocrinology.
Rodrigo Valderrama, MD, co-directs the
Diabetes Program at the Jackson Medical Mall and
at satellite clinics throughout Mississippi in support
of the Delta Diabetes Project. He also serves as education
coordinator for Internal Medicine residents
rotating in Endocrinology.
A new faculty member and former graduate
of our fellowship program, Dana Dale, MD,
joined the division in August 2006. Dale supports
the clinical and teaching thyroid and diabetes programs.
William Nicholas, MD, continues as a parttime
faculty member to provide care for patients
with endocrine disorders and training for the division’s
endocrinology fellowship program.
Damian Romero, PhD, spearheads several
projects that focus on the regulation of aldosterone
production and action. Romero was awarded the
Mead-Johnson Research Award and the Renal Research
Recognition Award from the American Physiological
Society.
Other endocrinology division faculty with
joint appointments include Mohammed Kazi, MD,
whose other appointment is with the G.V.
(“Sonny”) Montgomery Veterans’ Affairs Medical
Center, and Marshall Bouldin, MD, whose other appointment
is with the department’s Division of
General Internal Medicine and Hypertension. Kazi
completed an office-based management article on
testosterone deficiency for the American Journal of
Medicine.
Fellow Shema Ahmad, MD, presented a
poster on the topic of pituitary tumorigenesis at the
annual meeting of the Southern Society for Clinical
Investigation, where she was awarded “Best Research
Trainee.”
First-year fellow Christy Oswalt, MD,
joined the division in August 2006 and presented a
poster on the topic of endocrine tumors at the 2007
annual meeting of the Endocrine Society.
Incoming first-year fellows are Ben Seale,
MD, and Shreya Patel, MD.
Finally, the division is pleased to announce
the arrival of its newest faculty member, Gabriel I.
Uwaifo, MD. Prior to his appointment at UMMC,
Uwaifo was on the faculty at Georgetown University.
He has a strong scholarly record on the topics
of obesity and diabetes mellitus.
