Clinical initiatives include disease prevention and management of complex chronic medical conditions for adults. The division provides clinical care and consultation at University Hospital and in the University Medical Pavilion, Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center, and Lakeland Hypertension Clinic. Multidisciplinary teams provide disease management in several programs founded in the division. These programs rely on the expertise of physicians, nurse practitioners, and clinical pharmacists to coordinate the education and care of patients. Marshall Bouldin, MD, directs UMMC’s Diabetes and Metabolism Center and is the medical director of the Delta Health Alliance. This nationally recognized program provides education for health providers and clinical expertise in the management of patients with diabetes in five Mississippi Delta Clinics. Comprehensive diabetes care is also provided at the Medical Center. Honey East, MD, is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology. Dr East’s interests include the management of complex lipid disorders and modification of risk for cardiovascular disease. She directs the cardiometabolic program in the pavilion. Annette Low, MD, and Karen Grothe, PhD, direct a weight management program at the Medical Center. This program provides comprehensive lifestyle modification for overweight and obese persons. Low also continues her leadership of the Center of Excellence in Women's Health. Members of the hypertension program provide consultation and care for patients with difficult to control hypertension. Drs Wofford, Harkins, Stewart, and Andrew Brown, MD, MPH, are recognized by the American Society of Hypertension as specialists in clinical hypertension. Debbie Minor, PharmD, directs patient education for the clinic and provides consultation on pharmcotherapeutics. Terry Jackson, MD, continues his leadership in clinical areas as the Department of Medicine's vice chair for clinical programs. He provides oversight and adminstrative guidance of all clinical programs in the division. Members of the division are active in a number of research programs. Faculty members from the division have ongoing pharmaceutical and federally-funded clinical trials through the Clinical Research Program. Brown serves as director of the Medical Center's Patient Safety Center and is a member of AHRQ's National Advisory Council for Healthcare Research and Quality. Minor continues to mentor numerous medical and pharmacy students in the development of research proposals and presentations for the American College of Physicians. 53

Webb, NP, Instructor 54 Thomas Mosley, PhD Associate Division Director Geriatric Medicine The mission of the Division of Geriatric Medicine is to provide consultative geriatric care to the residents of our state, integrate geriatric principles throughout the curriculum for medical students and primary care residents, and contribute to the research of problems related to aging. Geriatricians evaluate and manage a variety of geriatric syndromes including cognitive impairment, falls, osteoporosis, polypharmacy, and urinary incontinence. Division Director Mark Meeks, MD, established a falls and osteoporosis clinic for older adults. This clinic is unique in offering a thorough assessment of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that predispose an older patient to falls. Multiple interventions are then tailored to the patient’s needs to lessen their risk of fall-related injuries. Kathy Gregg, MD, continues to provide primary care to patients in the University Medical Pavilion and at a nursing home in the community. She is the director of the “Senior Visits Program,” which provides first-year medical students the opportunity to visit with older residents in nursing homes. After each visit the students meet in small groups with faculty members to present their observations and discuss the conditions of their patients. She and Meeks also work with hospice services in the community to prepare for certification in hospice and palliative care.
