Jinna Shepherd, MD, received the 2006 James L. Achord Physician Award in recognition of her excellence and dedication as a physician and role model for medical students. This award is selected through a peer vote. Sue Downey received the 2006 Suzanne Clay Award in recognition of her contributions to the department’s research enterprise. Annual funding for research has increased by more than 500 percent since she assumed her position as director of research development. Bryan Barksdale, MD, received the 2006 Distinguished Alumnus Award in recognition of his exemplary leadership in medicine throughout the state and nation. Department of Medicine Awards of Excellence 2006 Recipients Mike Flessner, MD, PhD, received the 2006 Fred Allison Research Award in recognition of his sustained productivity of superior and significant research. Annette Low, MD, received the 2006 Community Service Award in recognition of her longstanding institutional commitment to improving women’s health and the health of their families through community outreach programs. Anil Minocha, MD, received the 2006 Herbert Langford Research Mentor Award in recognition of his exceptional service as research mentor to faculty, residents and students. 3

It was home to blues legends Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, Charley Patton, and Muddy Waters. It was home to Bo Diddley, Son House, John Lee Hooker, and Sam Cooke. Birthplace of the Blues And it was home to Elmore James, Willie Dixon, Otis Rush, and B. B. King To name a few. The blues is a uniquely American music form: its development influenced by spirituals, work songs, ballads, and its African roots. Its history is steeped in slavery, poverty, and toiling under the hot Mississippi sun.
