The mycotic research working group, headed by Chapman, comprises two areas of inquiry: John Cleary, PharmD, leads the antimycotic component, and Donna Sullivan, PhD, leads the mycotic component. Two clinical trials were recently completed dealing with the treatment of invasive candidiasis. During the coming year, the group plans to continue participation in other multi-center treatment trials, drug discovery, and clinical pharmacogenomics. Rathel Nolan, MD, heads the hospital epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance working group. Implementation of the TheraDoc information software is near completion and is being used to track nosocomial infectious and adverse drug events. Nolan also heads the international health working group. The international travelers clinic expanded its scope of operations to five days a week along with a walk-in immunization program. The clinic is staffed by Heather Dolan, NP. Under Nolan’s leadership, the division continues to return annually to Iquitos, Peru. This trip is a favorite elective of medical students and house staff. Participants spend two weeks in the jungle treating approximately 2,000 Peruvian Indians in need of basic health care. This popular elective has proven its worth by improving the health and healthcare of the population it supports and by providing new opportunities for research. Leandro Mena, MD, MPH, heads the division’s sexually transmitted infections (STI) working group. He also serves as the state consultant for STIs and the medical director of the Crossroads Clinic, the product of a collaborative effort with the Mississippi State Department of Health. The clinic is unique in its class as a comprehensive treatment center integrating clinical care, dental care, clinical research and as an education and training center. With more than 15,000 visits in 2006, it is becoming one of the best-recognized STI clinics in the southeastern U.S. Mena also heads the division’s education and training program, which is home to three fellows: Drs. John DePaula, Christina Muzny, and Olantunji Oluwatacle. Mena and Henderson joined the Gulf South Sexually Transmitted Infections and Topical Microbicides Cooperative Research Center, directed by David Martin, MD, at LSU Health Sciences Center. This center addresses issues related to sexually transmitted infections in HIV-infected women and other emerging STIs. Under the leadership of Chapman, the home antibiotic monitoring program continues to thrive. Over the last year, this program reduced the length of hospital stays and total healthcare costs. The antibiotic infusion center has been expanded to facilitate home antibiotic therapy. Two faculty members recently joined the division: Drs. Svenja Albrecht and Trini Matthew. Albrecht assumed leadership of the hepatitis evaluation and treatment center and will be taking over leadership of the division’s international health working group. Matthew leads the division’s efforts in providing consultative services to the Mississippi State Department of Health on management of tuberculosis. She will be working closely with Henderson in the HIV/AIDS working group. 59

Flessner, MD, PhD Division Director Nephrology The Division of Nephrology’s major goal is to provide a superb training program for Mississippi’s future nephrologists and excellent renal care to Mississippi citizens. The fellowship program trains nephrologists to treat patients with acute renal failure, chronic kidney disease, endstage renal disease, and those who need renal transplantation. Fellows develop skills in peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, acute and chronic care of renal transplant recipients, medical economics, medical ethics, and biomedical research. Additional preparation includes year-long, longitudinal experiences in the care of home patients (peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis) and in-center hemodialysis patients. Current fellows include Drs. Brandon Bean, Benahili Iboaya, Son Lam, Frederick Lee, Minesh Pathak, and Sellors Meador. Total inpatient service at University Hospital varies from 15 to 35 patients per day. Three to six new consultations are provided daily to other services; an equal number of renal patients are admitted to the nephrology inpatient service. The Medical Center’s artificial kidney unit provides acute dialysis to inpatients, and continuous renal replacement therapy is performed in all ICUs—typically on a daily basis. The Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center dialysis unit includes 35 dialysis chairs with a current census of 140. The home training program has just been moved to the Medical Mall and
