was recently named medical director of the adult hospital. Spurzem trained at the Mayo Clinic, the University of Utah School of Medicine, and the NIH. Spurzem’s research interests include bronchial epithelial cell injury and repair. Michael H. Baumann, MD, completed his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at the Medical University of South Carolina and served on the faculty for several years. In addition to his duties as chief quality officer for University Hospital, he remains active in clinical research and practice. At the VA Medical Center, Akinyinka Ajelabi, MD, is the director of its medical intensive care unit and home oxygen program. Sharon Douglas, MD, heads the ethics committee and supervises medical education at the VA Medical Center. She serves on the national AMA Council for Ethical and Judicial Affairs. Members of the division remain active in research. Division members active with the Jackson Heart Study include Drs. Ajelabi, Campbell, Petrini, and Bhagat. Campbell co-authored chapters in Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine and Chest Medicine and, along with Rajesh Bhagat, MD, a chapter in Pulmonary Pearls. Continuing his work in pleural diseases, Baumann published four papers and chaired two sessions at national meetings. Drs. Spurzem, Baumann, Ajelabi, Bhagat, and Petrini presented research findings at several national meetings. Faculty members are active participants in national associations. Campbell serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Respiratory Diseases and Respiratory Medicine. Baumann, sits on the Board of Regents of the American College of Chest Physicians, the board of directors for the International Pleural Journal, Pleural Newsletter, and Clinical Medicine and Research. Petrini is on the editorial board for Respiratory Care. The division’s fellowship program now includes seven fellows. This past year, four fellows presented posters, cases, or case discussions at national and regional professional conferences. Two fellows’ manuscripts were also published. Fellows include Drs. Cameron Huxford, Charlie Pearson, Brian Sumrall, Billy Williams, Joseph Bosarge, Ketan Patel and Rafat Mohammed. 65

Wilson, MD, Professor 66 Rheumatology Under the leadership of director Robert McMurray, MD, the Division of Rheumatology continues to expand its clinical services, increase community and institutional education programs, focus upon research, and further develop the Metabolic Bone Disease and Osteoporosis Program. The division’s eight board-certified academic rheumatologists and four rheumatology fellows provide rheumatologic consultative services at University Hospital, the University Medical Pavilion, the G.V. (“Sonny”) Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the Mississippi Methodist Rehabilitation Center (MMRC), and an outreach primary care clinic in Greenville. The division maintains vigorous outpatient services at the pavilion, the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center, and the VA Medical Center. Ken Hardy, MD, PhD, former division director, provides continued clinical, educational, and research guidance, support, and mentorship to junior faculty and fellows at University Hospital and the VA Medical Center. Hardy also provides vital educational and experiential support for the clinical case and immunology conferences as well as supervisory support for the fellows at the Medical Center’s private practice clinics.
