Cardiology
Under the direction of Michael Winniford,
MD, the Division of Cardiology continues
to grow, both in terms of its number
of faculty members and its numbers of fellows.
The division recently expanded and enhanced
its ambulatory clinical programs in the University
Medical Pavilion, moving into a larger suite
shared with cardiac and vascular surgery. This
shared location facilitates interaction among cardiovascular
providers and improves efficiency of outpatient
care for those patients who need to see both
a surgical and medical cardiovascular specialist.
The cardiovascular clinic is supported by an
adjacent expanded noninvasive laboratory offering
echocardiography, stress testing, nuclear cardiac imaging,
tilt table and EP device testing and microvolt
T-wave alternans testing. A peripheral vascular noninvasive
laboratory will be added during the coming
year.
During this past year, the division launched
its Heart Failure Disease Management Program.
Staffed by a specially-trained nurse practitioner,
Pharm.D., and nurse coordinators who follow practice
protocols and guidelines developed under the
direction of Charles Moore, MD, this program provides
outpatient care tailored to meet the individualized
needs of each of its patients. The program
emphasizes educating patients on self management
techniques and offers home monitoring services for
those who need them.
