The inpatient cardiology telemetry service moved into its new home on the third floor of UMMC’s new adult hospital, which opened its doors this past year. Newly renovated offices and teaching space are conveniently located immediately adjacent to the new telemetry area. Construction will begin soon to renovate the Heart Station to accommodate a new cardiac catheterization laboratory and noninvasive testing facility, including echocardiography and stress testing. Jack Payne, MD, directs the electrophysiology arrhythmia management service. A new stateof-the art dedicated EP lab opened in 2006. This facility provides an environment for the EP team to perform a full range of procedures, including device implants, complex ablation and pacemaker lead extractions. The lab was built to operating room standards to accommodate future surgical procedures that require EP mapping. With six new fellows starting in July 2007, the total size of the cardiology fellowship programs has grown to an all-time high of 14 fellows. Of this total, 12 participate in the three-year general cardiology program, directed by Tom Skelton, MD. The remaining two fellows participate in the division’s fourth-year interventional fellowship program, codirected by Drs. Cameron Guild and Winniford. The fellows receive the majority of their training at UMMC and the G. V. (“Sonny”) Montgomery VA Medical Center. In addition, each general cardiology fellow has an opportunity to rotate during his or her second or third year at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. The division continues its partnership with Baptist Medical Center and the VA Medical Center to train the two fourthyear interventional cardiology fellows. Under the direction of Steve Geraci, MD, chief of Medical Service at the G. V. (“Sonny”) Montgomery VA Medical Center, two new cardiology fellowship training positions were recently added at the VA: one in general cardiology and one in interventional cardiology. A new cardiac catheterization laboratory opened in early 2007, providing a state-of-the art facility for diagnostic and interventional cardiology procedures and EP procedures. Geraci also serves as vice chair of the Cardiovascular Disease and Hypertension Network of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of the Internal Medicine-In-Training Examination Question Writing Committee, an educational program sponsored jointly by the American College of Physicians, the Association of Professors of Medicine, and the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine. The Jackson Heart Study, headed by Herman Taylor, MD, MPH, is the largest study ever conducted examining the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in African Americans. Winniford serves on the steering committee of the Jackson Heart Study, and Drs. Ervin Fox and Skelton are actively involved in its ongoing research. The division continues its involvement in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation project, Expecting Success: Excellence in Cardiac Care. UMMC was selected from among 150 applicant hospitals across the U.S. as one of 10 participating sites in this 26month project that focuses on developing effective strategies for improving health care in minority patients with heart failure or myocardial infarction. Other division research projects include identifying optimal therapy for acute myocardial infarction, improving strategies for identifying heart patients at increased risk for sudden cardiac death, identifying optimal techniques for improving cardiac function with pacemaker therapy, and developing new cardiovascular imaging techniques. 45

Kemp, MD, Associate Professor Linda Tanaka, MD, Clinical Instructor Lianbin Xiang, MD, Instructor Clinical Immunology and Allergy The Division of Clinical Immunology and Allergy continues to expand and refine its clinical, teaching, and research programs. Several honors have come to members of the division in the clinical, teaching and research arenas. The division’s clinical operations are located within walking distance of the main campus. Its staff members are dedicated to meeting the special needs of patients with allergic, asthmatic and immunologic disorders. The division offers same-day clinic service for acute referrals and specialized diagnostic testing, including allergy testing, drug and other allergen challenges, fiberoptic rhinoscopy, patch testing for contact dermatitis, pulmonary function testing and aspirin desensitization. Immunotherapy is provided daily. Physicians in the division see both adult and pediatric patients, and all have joint faculty appointments in the Medicine and Pediatrics departments. Division Director Gailen D. Marshall, MD, PhD, also serves as the department’s vice chair for faculty development. In addition to regular clinical activities, Marshall provides clinical instruction and maintains an active research program that addresses the impact of psychological stress on regulatory networks of the immune response in patients with a variety of inflammatory diseases. Marshall chairs one of UMMC’s two Institutional Review Boards, co-chairs the Institutional Committee for Faculty Development, and serves as editor-in-chief for the
