Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He received the Jaros Memorial Lectureship Award at the 2006 annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Richard D. deShazo, MD, division faculty member and chair of the Department of Medicine, conducts research focusing on the pathophysiology of inflammatory sinus diseases, such as allergic fungal sinusitis and sarcoidosis. deShazo is also a specialty editor for the American Journal of Medicine and associate editor of the Southern Medical Journal. During this past year, he received the Special Service Award from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, and the ACAAI Distinguished Fellow Award from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. The weekly medical call-in radio show, Southern Remedy, which is aired on Mississippi Public Broadcasting and co-hosted by deShazo, received th 2007 Award for Excellence in Medical Communication from the Mississippi State Medical Association’s Council on Public Information. Stephen F. Kemp, MD, is associate division director for education and director of the allergy and immunology fellowship training program. Kemp recently obtained an ACORN fellowship award from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology to support training for a new fellow. He also serves as medical director of the Jackson Medical Mall’s Adult Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Clinic. Kemp’s research efforts focus on factors that influence susceptibility to, and severity of, anaphylaxis reactions in various patient populations. Linda Tanaka, MD, joined the faculty earlier this year after having been in private practice in the Jackson metropolitan area. Her clinical interests include asthma in pregnant women and their families. She is also involved in our fellowship teaching program. Lianbin Xiang, MD, recently joined the division and has established a molecular immunology laboratory. His research efforts center on determining genetic polymorphisms in stress hormone receptors as a way to identify individuals who are more sensitive to the adverse effects of psychological stress on their immune systems. Jeanette L. Arnold, RN, FNP, the division’s nurse practitioner, participates in a national educational effort for Allied Health Professionals aimed at increasing understanding of the theory and practice of allergy and immunology. She has recently been certified as an asthma educator. Senior fellow Matthew Oswalt, MD, completed his pediatrics residency and served as a chief resident before beginning his fellowship. Two junior fellows joined the divisional training program in July: Tran Ly, MD, who trained in internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, and Jo Reed, MD, who completed a medicine-pediatrics residency at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. The division recently established the Laboratory of Behavioral Immunology Research and is collaborating with other investigators to better understand the mechanisms and clinical implications of various forms of psychological stress (including psychosocial factors) on immune networks active in asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes and obesity. During this past year, peer-reviewed publications by faculty members have appeared in Brain, Behavior and Immunity, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, Cancer, Up-To-Date, and the American Journal of Medicine. 47

Lavu, MD, Assistant Professor 48 Thomas Abell, MD Acting Division Director Digestive Health and Nutrition The mission of the Division of Digestive Health and Nutrition is to educate students, pursue research activities, and treat patients with gastrointestinal, liver, and nutritional disorders. Anil Minocha, MD, director of the division since 2001, recieved the 2006 Langford Research Mentor Award in recognition of his exceptional service as research mentor to fellows and residents. Minocha left UMMC this past year after accepting a post in Louisiana. Thomas Abell, MD, serves as the division’s interim director. This past year, Abell received UMMC’s Bronze-level Excellence in Research Award. Under his leadership, the division is one of six participants in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases’ Gastroparesis Clinical Research Consortium. The goal of the Consortium is to perform clinical, epidemiological, and therapeutic research in gastroparesis and provide an infrastructure that can rapidly and efficiently design and conduct clinical trials for effective medical, surgical or other interventions to improve treatment of patients with gastroparesis. Since its inception, the Consortium has made great strides in establishing a national Gastro-
