5,000 new patients.
Total outpatient visits to the department's clinics during
the same time period increased to slightly more than
69,000, continuing a trend of growth established during the
previous five years, as illustrated below.

Several of the department’s clinical initiatives were
started or expanded during this past year. Honey East, MD,
became the first board-certified lipid specialist in the state.
The Division of Cardiology is working together as a single
group with the Department of Surgery’s cardiovascular surgery
and vascular surgery divisions. This alliance has resulted
in significant growth in our heart failure program.
The Division of Rheumatology was honored by the
department housestaff as “Consult Service of the Year.”
This honor reflects the collaborative efforts of an excellent
group of faculty and fellows who have made a special effort
this year in the hospital.
