ForewordIn recent years, the Institute for Work & Health has been actively engaged inbuilding relationships with Prevention System agencies and organizations inOntario. In these encounters, we often hear that potential research users want moreevidence about the effectiveness of interventions aimed at protectingworkers’ health. We are also told that even when research evidence exists, itis often hard to access, difficult to understand and is not always presented inlanguage and formats suitable to non-scientific audiences. In response to these needs, the Institute for Work & Health has established adedicated group to conduct systematic reviews of relevant research studiesin the area of workplace injury and illness prevention.• Our systematic review team monitors developments in theinternational research literature on workplace health protection andselects timely, relevant topics for evidence review.• Our scientists then synthesize both established and emergingevidence on each topic through the application of rigorous methods.• We then present summaries of the research evidence andrecommendations following from this evidence in formats which areaccessible to non-scientific audiences. The Institute consults regularly with workplace parties to identify areas ofworkplace health protection that might lend themselves to a systematicreview of the evidence. We appreciate the support of the Ontario Workplace Safety & InsuranceBoard (WSIB) in funding this four-year Prevention Systematic Reviewsinitiative. As the major funder, the WSIB demonstrates its own commitmentto protecting workers’ health by supporting consensus-based policydevelopment which incorporates the best available research evidence. Many members of the Institute's staff participated in conducting thisSystematic Review. A number of external reviewers in academic andworkplace leadership positions provided valuable comments on earlierversions of the report. On behalf of the Institute, I would like to expressgratitude for these contributions.Dr. Cameron MustardPresident, Institute for Work & HealthDecember, 2007A systematic review of injury and illness prevention and loss control (IPC) programs 3
