February 2011 30CriteriaLand Capability /Agricultural Potentialinfluence the agricultural use of a site.DescriptionThe land capability or agricultural potential rating for a site combines the soilcapability and the climate class to arrive at the sites potential to supportagriculture. The soils identified in Section 3 above were classified according to the methodology proposed bythe Agricultural Research Council – Institute for Soil, Climate and Water (2002). The criteriamentioned above were evaluated in the table below. The site is made up of several land capabilityclasses, namely Class II, III, IV, V, VI and VII. The Class II - III soils are suitable for cultivation andcan be used for a range of agricultural applications in the case of Class II. Class IV – V soils havefeatures that reduce their potential for agricultural use, this can be flood hazards, erosion risk, texture or drainage. The Class VI and VII soils have continuing limitations that cannot becorrected; in this case rock complexes, flood hazard, stoniness, and a shallow rooting zoneconstitute these limitations. Figure 4-1 illustrates the various land capability units on site.ZITHOLELE CONSULTING
