February 2011 67 12619Ngongoni VeldFigure 7-16: Northern Zululand Sourveld.Th Ngongoni Veld is located in the KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces, from Melmoth inthe north to near Libode in the former Transkei (including Eshowe, New Hanover, Camperdown,Eston, Richmond, Dumisa, Harding, Lusikisiki and the Libode area). The vegetation is dense, withtall grassland overwhelmingly dominated by unpalatable, wry Ngongoni grass (Aristida junciformis),with this monodominance associated with low species diversity. Wooded (thornveld) areas arefound in valleys at lower altitudes, where this vegetation unit grades into KwaZulu-Natal HinterlandThornveld and Bhisho Thornveld. Termitaria, support bush clumps with Acacia species, Cussoniaspicata, Ziziphus mucronata, Coddia rudis, Ehretia rigida etc.This unit is <strong>co</strong>nsidered vulnerable with a 25% <strong>co</strong>nservation target. Only less than 1% of this unit isstatutorily <strong>co</strong>nserved in the Ophathe and Vernon Crookes Nature Reserves.
