February 2011 35 126195 SURFACE WATER5.1 Data CollectionThe surface water data was obtained from the WR90 database from the Water Research Council.The data used included catchments, river alignments and river names. In addition water body datawas obtained from the CSIR land cover database (1990) to illustrate water bodies and wetlands.This data was supplemented with site observations during the various site visits5.2 River Catchments and CrossingsThe alternatives span over several rivers in the study area. The various river crossings aretabulated below. It is important to note that Eskom should not place pylon footings within waterbodies (or associated areas such as wetlands) and therefore the power lines are designed to spanacross these sensitive habitats.
