Building a Zen Report1.1 Preparing to Generate a ReportZen generates a report as the result of three independent steps:1. A developer creates a Zen report class and, within it, provides two XML documents:• XData ReportDefinition describes the data• XData ReportDisplay describes the display2. The developer or end-user generates output by entering the report class URI in a browser, or byinvoking the GenerateReport method from the command line or from within the application.The type of output must be specified:• XHTML can be viewed in a browser• PDF creates printer-friendly pages3. The report class guides the data and display information through one of the two processingsequences shown in the following figure: XHTML or PDF.4 Using Zen Reports
How a Zen Report Class Produces a ReportPreparing to Generate a ReportThe two main processing sequences for Zen reports are as follows:To XHTMLTo PDFFor XHTML output, XData ReportDefinition causes a query to be run. Zen formats the datafrom this query as XML. Meanwhile, XData ReportDisplay generates an XSLT transformationcalled the To-HTML stylesheet. Zen applies this XSLT transformation to the XML file. Theresult is the XHTML output file.For PDF output, XData ReportDefinition causes a query to be run. Zen formats the data fromthis query as XML. Meanwhile, XData ReportDisplay generates an XSLT transformationcalled the To-XSLFO stylesheet. Zen sends this XSLT transformation and the XML file toa third-party rendering tool, which uses them to generate a report in XSL-FO format. Thethird-party tool then renders the XSL-FO as PDF.Using Zen Reports 5
