If you set the breakOnField attribute for a that is nested inside another or ,the query in the containing or should ORDER BY the field that you identify as thebreakOnField for the nested . This is because field breaking examines the resultset sequentially,and creates a break whenever the specified field changes, so if the query is not ordered by thebreakOnField, a break may occur unexpectedly in the output for the nested . The previousexample is correct in this regard.3.6.4 Nested GroupsA may contain one or more elements, each of which may also contain one or more elements. The resulting report is said to contain nested groups. Any number of levels ofnesting is supported. A group’s level indicates how deeply nested the group is from the top of thereport definition.There are two major techniques for setting up the queries for nested groups. A Zen report can:• Define one query in the parent group and have the grouping levels break on columns within thisquery;or:• Define one query in the parent group and also define additional queries at the lower group levels.In this case the query for each child group is typically fed some parameter from the query for itsparent. The child query is executed once for each new breaking value from the parent query. Thefollowing code provides an example of this convention:...Important:When processing a group, any data that does not match the break condition is passedto any nested groups.When you use nested groups in Zen reports, references to fields within queries are resolved accordingto the following set of rules:• Every (including the outer ) defines a query context at that group’s level.• If a child does not define a new query, it uses its parent group’s query as if it was itsown.• References to fields within a , , or element are resolved bylooking at the query one level up from the current element.• References to fields within an or element are resolved by looking at thequery at the same level as the current element.Using Zen Reports 35
