They feel that they need the holidays to balance the work-lifepressures and to relax and re-energise for the next term.• Targeted programmes. Not being able to access professional developmentprogrammes in Māori or professional development designed to meet the needs ofMāori-medium teachers and students.• Location is an issue. Both teachers and principals prefer on–site delivery ofprofessional development programmes.• Professional development to help cross credit to degrees. All teachers have aminimum qualification of a diploma, but would like to do professional developmentthat will contribute to a Bachelor of Education or post graduate degree.• The shortage of suitable relievers is an issue. Non Māori spea<strong>ki</strong>ng teachers aresometimes employed to relieve in Māori-medium classrooms. School managementdo not object to teachers splitting the class and putting extra students in otherteachers’ classrooms for a day. In mainstream schools, the classrooms are oftenEnglish-medium classrooms. <strong>Te</strong>achers sometimes thought management did it as amoney saving measure as well. In one school, management did not tell the teachersuntil that morning they had not been able to get a Māori spea<strong>ki</strong>ng reliever andtherefore approached their regional multi-serve company to supply them with anEnglish spea<strong>ki</strong>ng reliever for the day.Q17 Is availability and type of support and development available for you as a teacher afactor that you consider when thin<strong>ki</strong>ng about your career?Q18 If yes, in what way?
