ORGANIZATION UNIT OF THE VICE-DIRECTOR FOR GEOLOGY * GEOLOGICAL DIVISIONmedicine-geochemical research of the Štiavnické vrchy Mts.area. In the scope of this regional research we monitor the contentof the most risky potentially toxic chemical elements (mainlyAs, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Se and Zn) in the geological environment(soils, waters and sediments), in food web (locally grown vegetables)and human biological material (hair and nails).MonitoringSystematic monitoring serves for objective knowledge of environmentalcharacteristics and assessment of their changes withinobserved space and time. The monitoring system and its informationsystem are the most important tools for safeguarding the environmentquality, which at the same time underpins decision-makingon recent activities and perspectives in the sphere of environment. The compound of the Monitoring System of the Slovak RepublicEnvironment is the Partial Monitoring System – Geological Factors. It is focused in so-called geological hazards mainly, i.e. harmfulnatural or anthropogeneous geological processes, which posea threat to natural environment and, consequently, to humans. The project Partial Monitoring System – Geological Factors inaccord with concept of actualization and rationalization of environmentalmonitoring for the period of 2005 – 2010 was approved byOPM ME SR, Decree No. 42 dated 04/04/2005; we continue inmeasurements in the scope of the following subsystems:01 Landslides and other slope deformations,02 Tectonic and seismic territory activity,03 Anthropogenic sediments of the environmental load character,04 Mining impact upon environment,05 Monitoring of radon volume activity in the geological environment,06 Stability of rock massifs underlying historical objects,07 Monitoring of stream sediments,08 Volume unstable soils.By the Resolution of the Government SR No. 907 dated August21, 2002 was approved a Concept of sustainable exploitation rockof environment sources. Based upon the given concept we submitannually for the Government Session an information on the statusof the monitoring of the geological factors of the environment withidentification of threatening accidents and options how to preventthem. The monitoring results provide early information, which allowto take appropriate measures in order to anticipate emergencyevents. Such information is forwarded to the Office for Civil Protectionof the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic based upon anAgreement on the collaboration in provision and utilization of geologicalinformation, which entered in force on September 15, 2006.In spring 2007 was established a working group at EuroGeo-Surveys - EGS Geohazards Working Group and the SGIDŠ becameits member. We approved basic working documents andstrategic plan of assessment and prevention against geologicalhazards in Europe.Main scarp of the landslide above the Veľká Čausa Village. Its principle isunified approach in data processing and their spatial presentationin form of map outputs, which reflect impact of monitored processesupon environment. The information on monitoring is availableat the Internet site of the Partial Monitoring System of GeologicalFactors (http://dionysos.gssr.sk/cmsgf). For all the clients both fromthe professional as well as laic publics the annual reports are madeavailable, along with overview of monitored activities and directdata output from the monitoring system of geological factors. With the previous project is closely connected the Creation ofStandards and the Methodology of Laboratory Tests in EngineeringGeology. It is focused in technical standardization andprocurement of desired quality of laboratory tests in the sphere ofengineering geology in Slovakia in terms of the European StandardEurocode 7 – EN 1997-2.In the monitoring participated also the Geoanalytical Laboratories(GAL). In the year 2007 were realized analyses of more than800 groundwater samples in the scope of the groundwaters monitoringin Slovakia. The samples comprised:• groundwaters of the Žitný ostrov (Rye Island),• groundwaters from the Eastern, Central, Northern andWestern Slovakia,• selected groundwaters – project KRAS and projectQUATERNARY.GAL have been accredited to carry out control analyses andgroundwaters analyses in Slovakia according to § 2 Sect. c ofRegulation 221 Ministry of the Environment SR dated 29/04/2005,which defines particulars on search for and assessment of the surfacewaters and groundwaters status, on their monitoring, keepingevidence on waters and on water balance.Quantitative components in waters were determined accordingto valid STN and institutional standards, which were elaborated inGeoanalytical Laboratories. All the approaches are validated andaccredited.State Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr Annual Report 2007 15
