INTRODUCTION OBJECTIVES THREATS ASSETS STRATEGIESINTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL OBJECTIVESAlthough the ultimate focus of ecosystem orconservation projects may be ecologicalimprovements, these are tightly interrelatedwith goals for the quality of human lives andcommunities in the area. For example, manyprojects seek to promote a healthy economy,protect community character, maintain anoverall high quality of life or build a “sense ofplace.”Economicdiversity, stabilityor healthCommunityCharacter andResilienceSustainabilityQuality of LifeWHAT DOES IT MEAN?An economy with a variety of industries and businesses that movesbeyond boom and bust cycles and maintains living wage jobs.Community with a unique “feel” (rural, urban, historic, sense of place,“extraordinary place”) and an ability to adapt to social and economicchanges for the benefit of the community. These ideas are alsoassociated with “vibrant” communities.A long-term balance between economic and ecosystem health. Forexample, maintaining community livelihoods and the cultureassociated with cattle grazing in a way that preserves high qualityriparian habitat, wildlife, and water.
