PLANNING MALAYSIAJournal of the Malaysia Institute of Planners (2012)The questionnaire survey was divided into four sections. The firstsection was the revealed preference where the respondent provided theirperception on the effectiveness of the traffic sign. These variables were thedependent variables. Meanwhile, the second section was on the tripcharacteristics. The third section dealt with the driving characteristics of therespondents. Trip and driving characteristics were independent variables. Thelast section was on the basic questions pertaining the respondent’s backgrounds.Variables such as gender, age and faculties have been asked. These variableswere the independent variables. Likert Scale was used for the relevantperception questions.DATA ANALYSIS AND FINDINGSEffectiveness of New Static Information Signage in IIUMThe questionnaire has been distributed to 130 respondents. 128 have beenanalysed after the data cleaning. The Relative Importance Index (RII) methodwas adopted by many researchers (Kometa, et al., 1994). This method wasadopted to analyse the data collected from the questionnaire survey. Therespondent’s perception towards the traffic sign has been scaled by; 1=veryunsatisfied, 2=unsatisfied, 3=satisfied and 4= very satisfied. The four-pointscale 0–3 mentioned earlier was transformed into relative importance indices foreach satisfaction of related question on font size, board size, illumination, colour of sign, language and siting of sign. The indices were then used todetermine the rank of each item. These rankings made it possible to crosscompare the relative importance of user’s satisfaction and the measure of trafficsign effectiveness. The RII was used to determine the variables most effectivefor informatory traffic sign in IIUM.Table 1: Relative Importance Index (R.I.I)Measure ofEffectivenessVery Satisfied(Score of 3)Satisfied(Score of 2)Unsatisfied(Score of 1) R.I.I RankLanguage of sign 52 156 74 148 2 2 0.79 1Board Size 30 90 86 172 12 12 0.71 2Font Size 26 78 75 150 27 27 0.66 3Colour of sign 28 84 58 116 42 42 0.63 4Siting of sign 18 54 78 156 32 32 0.63 5Luminance 24 72 52 104 52 52 0.59 6Based on the findings, language of sign most effective, with a R.I.Iscores 0.79 highlight in the Table 1.
