• In higher density developments, does the quality of design<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>ish extends also to the <strong>in</strong>dividual dwell<strong>in</strong>g and its<br />

immediate surround<strong>in</strong>gs?<br />

• Do new homes offer decent levels of amenity, privacy,<br />

security and energy efficiency?<br />

• Will the orientation of the dwell<strong>in</strong>g and its <strong>in</strong>ternal layout<br />

maximise levels of daylight and sunlight, thus <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

not only the amenity of the occupants but the energy<br />

demand for heat and light?<br />

• Has privacy been considered <strong>in</strong> the design of the home?<br />

• Has the design sought, where possible, to create child- and<br />

pedestrian-friendly car-free areas, especially <strong>in</strong> higher<br />

density schemes, through the careful location of access<br />

streets and park<strong>in</strong>g areas?<br />

• Do all houses (terraced, semi-detached and detached) have<br />

an area of private open space beh<strong>in</strong>d the build<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e?<br />

• Has the design been <strong>in</strong>fluenced by the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of<br />

universal design (see chapter 1)?<br />

• Has adequate provision been made for the storage and<br />

collection of waste materials?<br />
