After the landmark publicationof Moore et al (1995), which indicatedthat all major cereal crop genomescould be represented by 19 segmentsfound in the rice genome, rice has takena solid position at the center of bothgraphic presentations (adapted from Galeand Devos 1998, this box) as well asresearch efforts to use map-based clon-ing for gene discovery and isolation fromthe much larger genomes of oat, wheat,and maize. The rice genome, with only400 million DNA base pairs (bp), is aboutfour times larger than Arabidopsis, themodel dicot.
