IntroductionReporting ComponentsAll reporting components rely on the Websense filtering components. Install reportingcomponents after installing the filtering components.The filtering components (including Filtering Service, Policy Server, and UserService) must be running in order for complete log records to be generated.Installation instructions for Websense reporting components can be found in theInstallation Guide. Consult the Websense Manager Help for information about usingWebsense reporting tools.Table 2 Reporting ComponentsComponentDefinitionDatabase ComponentsLog Database(requires a supporteddatabase engine)Log Server, orLinux Log ServerStores Internet request data collected by Log Server for use byWebsense reporting tools.The database is created when Log Server is installed.• In a Windows environments, reporting components requireeither Microsoft® SQL Server or MSDE. (MSDE can beinstalled from the Websense Web site.)• MySQL is required for Explorer for Linux.Required for Websense reporting.Logs Internet request data, including:• The request source• The category or protocol associated with the request• Whether the request was permitted or blocked• Whether keyword blocking, file type blocking, quotaallocations, bandwidth levels, or password protection wereappliedLog Server can log to only one Log Database at a time, and onlyone Log Server can be installed for each Policy Server.Log Server must be installed on a Windows machine to enableinvestigative and presentation reports, and Today and Historypage charts, in Websense Manager.Environments with a high volume of Internet activity shouldplace Log Server on a separate machine. Log Server processingcan consume considerable system resources.Reporting applicationsWebsense ManagerWhen Websense Manager and Log Server are installed onWindows machines, Websense Manager includes multiple,graphical reporting options:• Charts on the Today and History pages show current andrecent Internet activity.• Investigative reports provide an interactive way to viewinformation in the Log Database.• Presentation reports include a series of templates that youcan use to generate graphical reports.14 Websense Web Security and Websense Web Filter
