Deploying Network AgentSwitched networks with multiple Network AgentsA busy network may need multiple Network Agents to monitor different networksegments or IP address ranges. Network Agent operates best when it is closer to thecomputers it is assigned to monitor. Deploying Network AgentGateway configurationA gateway provides a connection between two networks. The networks do not need touse the same network communication protocol. The gateway can also connect anetwork to the Internet.Network Agent can be installed on the gateway machine, allowing Network Agent tomanage and monitor all Internet traffic. The gateway can either be a third-party proxyserver or a network appliance. Do not install Network Agent on a firewall.ImportantThe gateway configuration shown here is best used insmall to medium networks.In larger networks, performance can suffer as a result ofresource competition between the gateway software andNetwork Agent.Figure 10 shows Network Agent monitoring the Internet traffic at the proxy gatewayor caching appliance directly attached to the firewall.Figure 10 Network Agent installed on the gatewayDeployment Guide 59
