Crisis Stabilization Unit ServicesUnit Value 1 day Maximum Daily Units 1 unitInitial Auth 20 units Re-AuthorizationAuth Period 20 Days Utilization Criteria LOCUS scores: 4(residential detox only)-6This is a residential alternative to or diversion from inpatient hospitalization, <strong>of</strong>fering psychiatric stabilization <strong>and</strong> detoxification services. The program providesmedically monitored residential services for the purpose <strong>of</strong> providing psychiatric stabilization <strong>and</strong> substance detoxification services on a short-term basis. Servicesmay include:1) Psychiatric medical assessment;Service2) Crisis assessment, support <strong>and</strong> intervention;Definition3) Medically Monitored Residential Substance Detoxification (at ASAM Level III.7-D).4) Medication administration, management <strong>and</strong> monitoring;5) Brief individual, group <strong>and</strong>/or family counseling; <strong>and</strong>6) Linkage to other services as needed.AdmissionCriteriaContinuingStay CriteriaDischargeCriteriaServiceExclusionsClinicalExclusionsRequiredComponents1. Treatment at a lower level <strong>of</strong> care has been attempted or given serious consideration; <strong>and</strong> #2 <strong>and</strong>/or #3 are met:2. Individual has a known or suspected illness/disorder in keeping with target populations listed above; or3. Individual is experiencing a severe situational crisis which has significantly compromised safety <strong>and</strong>/or functioning; <strong>and</strong> one or more <strong>of</strong> the following:a. Individual presents a substantial risk <strong>of</strong> harm to self, others, <strong>and</strong>/or property or is so unable to care for his or her own physical health <strong>and</strong> safety as to createa life-endangering crisis. Risk may range from mild to imminent; orb. Individual has insufficient or severely limited resources or skills necessary to cope with the immediate crisis; orc. Individual demonstrates lack <strong>of</strong> judgment <strong>and</strong>/or impulse control <strong>and</strong>/or cognitive/perceptual abilities to manage the crisis; ord. For detoxification services, individual meets admission criteria for Medically Monitored Residential Detoxification.This service may be utilized at various points in the course <strong>of</strong> treatment <strong>and</strong> recovery; however, each intervention is intended to be a discrete time-limited service thatstabilizes the individual.1. Individual no longer meets admission guidelines requirements; or2. Crisis situation is resolved <strong>and</strong> an adequate continuing care plan has been established; or3. Individual does not stabilize within the evaluation period <strong>and</strong> must be transferred to a higher intensity service.This is a comprehensive service intervention that is not to be provided with any other service(s), except for the following:• Methadone Administration1. Individual is not in crisis.2. Individual does not present a risk <strong>of</strong> harm to self or others or is able to care for his or her own physical health <strong>and</strong> safety.3. Severity <strong>of</strong> clinical issues precludes provision <strong>of</strong> services at this level <strong>of</strong> intensity.1. Crisis Stabilization Units (CSU) providing medically monitored short-term residential psychiatric stabilization <strong>and</strong> detoxification services shall be designated by the<strong>Department</strong> as both an emergency receiving facility <strong>and</strong> an evaluation facility <strong>and</strong> must be surveyed <strong>and</strong> licensed by the DBHDD.2. In addition to all service qualifications specified in this document, providers <strong>of</strong> this service must adhere to content in the DBHDD Rules <strong>and</strong> Regulations for AdultCrisis Stabilization Units, Chapter 82-3-1.3. Individual referred to a CSU must be evaluated by a physician within 24 hours <strong>of</strong> the referral.4.
