Polling Application Services<strong>SNMPc</strong> supports customized polling of any TCP application service, simplified polling of four built-inTCP application services (FTP, SMTP, WEB, and TELNET), and external polling of non-TCP servicesby custom applications. This section describes how to poll TCP services. For more information aboutexternal program polling, please use the Help/Help Topics menu, open the Customizing <strong>SNMPc</strong> linkand then open the Developing Service Polling Applications link.<strong>SNMPc</strong> polling agents can automaticallycheck for the existence of the built-in TCPservices on discovered devices andconfigures these services to be polled.Use the Proto tab of the Config/Discovery-Polling dialog to enable discovery of the fourbuilt-in TCP services.To enable service polling for a device, right-click thedevice object in a map view and use the Propertiesmenu then select the Attributes tab. Select the ServicePolling attribute.• Use the Value pulldown list to select one of theavailable services (*Ftp, *Telnet, *Smtp, *Weband custom names).• To select multiple services for the device, type inthe service names in the Value edit box, separatedby commas. For example: “*Ftp,*Web”.• Alternatively, double-click the Service Pollingattribute, or use the “>>” button, to selectmultiple services.Custom Service definitions allow more flexible and powerful polling of your application servers:• You can optionally send a text string to a TCP service and compare the reply to a text pattern.• Each map object can poll up to 16 different Custom Services.• There is no limit on the total number of Custom Service definitions that can be created.• You can optionally run an external custom application to poll the service.Double-click the Service Polling attribute, or use the “>>” button, to edit Custom service definitions.The Poll Services dialog is displayed.26
