HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTSthey had accessed university health services between course enrolment for 2005(February) and mid-May.It is useful to know whether there is a systematic difference between students whochoose to make use of university health services and those who choose not to do sowhen they feel there is a need to obtain medical help.A range of demographic and other variables was explored to see whether theydifferentiate significantly between these two groups of students. Fourteen variablesdifferentiate significantly between them:• those who visited the health service are significantly older than those who did not321 ;• more students than expected from the Arts, Medical/Dental/Health Sciences andScience Faculties visited the health service, while fewer students than expectedfrom the Economic/Commerce and Engineering Faculties visited 322 ;• fewer students than expected from PR China visited the health service, while morethan expected from English-speaking countries, Indonesia, Other South Asia, andLatin American countries visited the service 323 ;• fewer Asian students than expected and more non-Asian students than expectedvisited the service 324 ;• more students than expected who spoke some English when growing up visitedthe health service 325 ;• those with poorer perceived general health visited the health service at a lowerrate than expected 326 ;• fewer students than expected whose health is perceived to be worse here than athome visited the health service, while more than expected visited the healthservice if they perceive their health here to be about the same as at home 327 ;• those who visited the health service have a significantly higher score on theConnectedness scale 328 ;• they also have significantly lower scores on the Cultural Stress 329 , Abuse andDistress 330 , Depression 331 , Anxiety 332 ,, and Stress scales 333 ;• friends’ use of health service: more students than expected with friends whovisited the health service and fewer students without such friends visited theservice themselves 334 .Thirteen 335 of these variables were entered into a logistic regression analysis, usingthe backward likelihood ratio method, in order to determine which variables predicted321 t=2.30, 359.7 df, p
