Langkawi comprises a community of Malaysian fishermen and rice farmers who have lived
on the island for generations. Located off the northwest coast between Phuket and Penang,
we are influenced by many cultures. We are a friendly, laid back, multicultural community
and we take pride in our island, our religions, our way of life, our food and our knowledge
of the jungle and the sea for sourcing natural remedies. We respect our neighbors and love
our children who enjoy the freedom of a peaceful and safe island. The needy are cared for
by village communities and government agencies. We strive to sustain the ecology of our
beautiful island through good stewardship and sustainable practices. Throughout Langkawi
you will be greeted by the friendly smiles of people who have a genuine interest in all visitors

Getting to Langkawi
By Air
The Langkawi International Airport at Padang Matsirat is about 20 km from Kuah and 8 km from the beach resorts on Cenang Beach.
Direct air services from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi are provided by Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia twenty times daily. Malaysia Airlines
also flies daily from Penang to Langkawi. Silk Air, Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia fly from Singapore to the island daily.
By Sea
There are regular ferry services daily to Langkawi from both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. The journey to Langkawi from Kuala Kedah
and Kuala Perlis takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and 45 minutes respectively. The journey from Penang to Langkawi by ferry takes about
2 hours 30 minutes. Ferry services from Satun Thailand takes about an hour.
By Cruise
A novel way to take a holiday to Langkawi is by cruise ship. Cruises are of varying duration depending on the ports of call en route
to Langkawi. Embarkation points are at Port Klang and Singapore. For enquires on cruise packages, contact your travel agent or the
various cruise operators.
By Road
Visitors Travelling by road have to drive to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis on the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the main
take-off points by ferry to Langkawi. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kedah takes about six hours while Kuala Perlis is an
additional hour away. Car parking facilities are available at both jetties.
By Rail
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) or Malayan Railway provides comfortable and economical rail services from Kuala Lumpur to
Alor Setar and Arau. From Alor Setar or Arau, you can take a taxi or bus to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis respectively and then proceed
by ferry to Langkawi.
Getting Around
Being a small island, Langkawi is relatively easy to travel around. In Malaysia, cars are driven on the left side of the road. Direction signs
are in English as well as Bahasa Malaysia but many road signs are in Bahasa so it useful to check out the translations. Driving is quite
relaxed although careful driving, especially in the rural areas is advised.
Cars for Hire
Roads in Langkawi are well signposted and in good condition so hiring a
car for a self-drive adventure is a good option. You will need to watch out
for motorbike riders and the occasional water buffalo that may wander onto
the road. It is recommended that you use a licensed and insured car rental
company to prevent any unpleasant incidents in the event of an accident.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available and reception staff in resorts can make bookings for
you. The taxis work on a fixed price basis and we do recommend you check
the rate card when your fare is quoted. Some taxi drivers speak better English
than others and they can prove to be very useful for round island trips as they
can identify many points of interest. Taxis can be hired from the airport, all
hotels and from major attractions.
