THE HERALDJuly 1/15, 2007Travelogue11(continued from p.10)Metropolitan John and I enjoyedsupper, and reflected further upon theevents of the day, and prepared for avery early morning on Sunday.Sunday September 24 — St. Thecla,the Great-Martyr (new calendar)Metropolitan John and I were invitedto accompany Metropolitan Germanosto the Monastery of St. George,on the island of Buyukada. This ancientmonastery was founded in thetenth century, and dedicated to St.George. Twice a year, it is the site ofvery large pilgrimages, and one of thesetwo days is St. Thecla's Day. On thisday, because of the large numbers ofpilgrims no vehicles are allowed tooperate on this island, other than "official"vehicles. Metropolitan John and Itraveled in the "church entourage," includingbeing met at the ferry anddriven right up to the top of the highhill where the monastery is located bythe local police.This was another very powerfuland moving experience for MetropolitanJohn and me. First, the vast majorityof pilgrims are Muslims who havecome for generations to pray beforethe icon of St. George the Great-Martyr.Many miracles have been witnessedbefore this icon, and St. George hasinterceded and worked many miraclesfor people of all faiths and walks of life.Secondly, Metropolitan John blessedme to serve the liturgy with MetropolitanGermanos in the main monasterychurch. This church was built in thetenth century. Not a large church, itwas nonetheless filled to over-flowingwith pilgrims. Thirdly, MetropolitanGermanos, an older, experienced andvery pious man, blessed and encouragedme to chant portions of the liturgyin "my language." Additionally MetropolitanJohn and I said "Otche Nash,"(the Lord's Prayer) in Ukrainian.Fourthly, as God's grace wouldhave it, on this day there happened tobe many pilgrims from Bulgaria, Ukraineand Russia who heard the Ukrainian/Slavoniclanguage in the DivineLiturgy. Following the liturgy, bothMetropolitan John and I were surroundedby pilgrims seeking our blessings,—anothervery powerful andmoving moment.And fifthly, a woman who we determinedwas Armenian, but spokevery little Turkish, and no Greek orEnglish, sought out Metropolitan Johnfor a special blessing over her and anordinary plastic bottle of water. Wewere able to determine further that herson was very ill, and she believed thatGod's grace would manifest itselfthrough this bishop (MetropolitanJohn of the Ukrainian Church, fromCanada.) in this place and on this day,healing her son. The three monks fromMt. Athos who man this monasterywere most gracious in their hospitality,and after lunch, and fellowship, MetropolitanJohn and I had returned to ourhotel by the middle of the afternoon,back in Istanbul.After receiving Metropolitan John'sblessing, I met up with (my) DobrodiykaSonia's first cousin and his family.They have been residents of Istanbulfor fourteen years, and were most graciousin their hospitality. As well, theywere helpful in describing some of theparticular nuances and challenges thatthe Christian minority faces in Turkey,and particularly in Istanbul. Very earlyMonday morning, September 25, MetropolitanJohn and I flew back toWinnipeg from Istanbul, via Frankfurtand Toronto, arriving in Winnipeg inthe late afternoon.Closing thoughts and reflectionsThe importance of these visits andtrips cannot be over-emphasized. OurUOCC has a contribution to make andour voice needs to be heard in the Patriarchateof Constantinople. A primeway of doing this is to visit the Patriarchateregularly and frequently.It was abundantly clear that thePatriarch himself and therefore his administrativestaff are very interested inthe views of the Ukrainian OrthodoxChurch of Canada. The Patriarchate isobviously willing to work with ourchurch for the ongoing growth and developmentof our mission here in Canada.Perhaps equally significant, theEcumenical Patriarchate seeks to "partner"with the UOCC, which it sees as amoderate and therefore potentiallymediatative voice with respect to thesuccessful resolution of the many challengesfacing the Church in Ukraine.Our church's contribution however,can and will be made only if andwhen and to the extent that we, as achurch, dialogue with the Patriarchate—appropriately, honourably and respectfullyadvocating for the needs andbest interests of Ukrainian Orthodoxythroughout the world.To this end may God continue toinspire and lead Metropolitan Johnand our Ukrainian Orthodox Churchin Canada to continue to work for thegrowth and betterment of the universalOrthodox Church, including the OrthodoxChurch in our ancestral homelandof Ukraine.Зелені Свята в Громадах Свв. Вонамала доповідь про чотки (prayerrope) та Ісусову молитву на них. Сестрарозповіла, що християнськіпрактики є плідними лише тоді, колимають духа Божого в собі.Молитва плідна тоді, коли проказаназ увагою і свідомістю, що Господьбачить і чує нас, що ми стоїмоперед Богом. Святі ставлять Ісусовумолитву (звичайно її моляться начотках) на перше місце посередхристиянських практик, настількисильною і ефективою вона є.У ту суботу в нашій Святій Церквіпоминають усіх від віку спочилих,це Троїцька батьківська субота.Отож, після обіду o 1-ій год. над рікоюАтабаска біля Пам'ятника Піонерамзібралися всі присутні, щобПанахидою вшанувати пам'ять новопреставленоїВікторії, членки Союзу,бл. п. Домініки Огієнко та МитрополитаІларіона, а також 75-тусумну річницю невинних 10 мільйонівжертв штучного Голодоморув Україні.Після Відправи над рікою програмаконференції продовжуваласякультурними та туристичними точкамидня.Ранком в неділю Святої Тройці,свято П'ятидесятниці, в Церкві СвятоїТройці в Бойл вірні зібралися наСвяту Літургію, щоб святкуватиХрам. По Відправі та Малому Освяченніводи, процесії довкола храму,всі присутні перейшли до залу, дебув храмовий обід та святочна короткапрограма.Гостями були сестра Богданна тановоприбуле з Чернівців до Канадимолоде подружжя Олександер і Таня.Сестра Богданна розповіла промонашество в Православній Церкві,в Україні та на Американськомуконтиненті, та інші християнськітеми. Відповіла на запитання, якімали парафіяни стосовно монашествата Церкви.
