2007UWAC Projects at a GlanceHelping others is a big part of belongingto the Ukrainian Women'sAssociation of Canada. Itis what our Christian faith expectsof us individually and what ourorganization expects of us collectively,as members of our Ukrainian Women'sAssociation of Canada.Three of the fourteen stated purposesin the Constitution of the UkrainianWomen's Association of Canada(UWAC), call upon members to:"Support and execute all manner ofdeeds and acts that contribute to thecontinual growth of the Ukrainian OrthodoxChurch of Canada (UOCC),and to encourage its members to practiceand live by the Christian principlesas enunciated by the said UOCC", to"Promote the welfare of, and to cooperatewith, the member organizations, institutions, and affiliated members associatedwith the Ukrainian Self-RelianceLeague of Canada and the UkrainianOrthodox Church of Canada",to "Support programs financially toensure that the basic human needs aremet...", and to "Propagate and defendthe aspirations of self-determinationand human rights in all nations, in particular'Ukraine'". These and other prioritieskeep the members and branchesOrthodox Men's Retreat 2007This year's Men's Retreat was heldat Sanctum Retreat by Caroline,Alberta on March 23 to 25th.(Sanctum Retreats website is(http://www.sanctumretreat.ca/home.htm). THE HERALDJuly 1/15, 20079Монашество і його значення для Христової Церкви(продовження з минулого числа)(continued from the previous issue)4. Monasticism and its meaning for Christ's Church4. Importance of monasticism.Being a depository of prayer, pietyand grace, monasteries are veryuseful and successful in thiswork. One such example is thesuccess of St. Spiridon at the I EcumenicalCouncil (325 A.D.). MetropolitanIlarion states: "The whole of Ukrainianculture, all Ukrainian science, all Ukrainian philosophy and so on—all this was created by the UkrainianOrthodox Church" 10 . Ukraine is notan exception among other nations, because the organizing and the developmentof the written language, educationand sciences of many Europeannations are owing to monastic communities.Educated Ukrainian monasticsfounded and led schools, both primaryand secondary. Further, they wrotebooks: secular and scientific (by Nestorthe Chronicler); ecclesiastical ("Lives ofthe Saints" of St. Demetrius Tuptalo,Metropolitan of Rostov), as well as manualsand apologetic works. They compiledChurch services, translated theHoly Scriptures and liturgical books(starting with the holy monks fromGreece Cyril and Methodius, Apostles toSlavs), and they wrote Church servicesfor national saints, icons and akathists.Other Ukrainian monastics who madesimilar contributions in Ukraine andabroad are: Ann, princess of Kyiv (Ukraine);John II, Metropolitan of Kyiv(Ukraine); John Maximovich, Metropolitanof Tobolsk (Russia); Cyril, Bishopof Turov (Belarus); Paul Konuskevych,Metropolitan of Tobolsk and Siberia(Russia); Arseniy Matsievich, Metropolitanof Rostov (Russia); Job,Abbotof Pochaiv (Ukraine); Job Kniahnytsky,Abbot of Maniava Skete (Ukraine); andPaisiy Velychkovsky, Abbot of NeamtMonastery (Romania). As well, culture, arts, artistic handicraftsflourished in the monasteries. For example, the building and iconwriting of the beautiful Holy DormitionChurch of the Lavra of the Cavesin Kyiv was carried out by artistsbrought in from Constantinople. Theytaught their skills to others, such as Sts.Alipius and Gregorius. These Greekartists then remained as monks in theKyiv Lavra. The monasteries also developedicon writing, gilding, carving, sewing, embroidery and other arts.As evident from the above, monasticsgive all their time to the Church.Their whole life is focused on the needsзавзяттям неофітів» 11 . According to MetropolitanIlarion (Ohienko) "monasteriesare filled with ardent servants of Godwho have given the whole of their lifefor service to the Faith...." 11In summary, monasticism is the heartand the soul of the Orthodox Church.Monastics are completely devoted totheir Church. They are the power of livingprayer. Monasteries are schools thatprepare workers of indispensable Christianexample for the Church. Monasteriesare a self-acting charitable networkin the Church. Thus monasteries wereand remain an important pillar andfoundation for the healthy life of anyChurch. Today there is no OrthodoxChurch without monasteries.
