Always with updated information - www.nuncbrand.comBarcoded ProductsCustom Services182Barcodes play an essential role in tracking samples. Theyprovide a tool for reviewing the large quantities of data. As aconsequence, Nunc Brand Products offer barcoded products– either as part of our standard assortment (F96 new standarddesign and barcoded flasks with existing catalog numbers) oras customized products, e.g. barcoded CryoTubes, barcodedMicroWell plates and other Nunc Brand Products. We offer the complete range of barcoded products <strong>plus</strong> 2scanners to read barcodes. Why use barcodes?A barcode provides the safest way to keep track of your sample. The code is extremely durable and will help reduce humanerrors. Barcoded products are suitable for automated or manualoperations. Some barcoded products provide a trouble-freehuman readable code, which can be manually entered when ascanner is not available.BarcodesA barcode is a “machine-readable code” which can be usedwhen many samples are to be processed, analyzed or stored bymeans of automated equipment. The advantages of using barcodes are:• Improved accuracy (see chart below)• Increased efficiency• Higher safety levels• Reduced costsTime Requiredto key 20 char.Accuracy 1 error / 300charactersManual Entry Barcode Scanning10 seconds 4 seconds1 error / 10 millioncharactersAvailable codes:Code 39Code 39 is an alphanumerical code, meaning that it hasboth numbers and letters. It can have variable lengths and isself-checking. Every Code 39 character has five bars and fourspaces. Code 39 is self-checking.Interleaved 2 of 5Int 2 of 5 is numerical code (no letters) and is also self-checkingto improve the data security. Each Interleaved 2 of 5 charactersencodes two digits (one in the bars and one in the spaces). Each character has five bars or five spaces (two broad and threenarrow). It is recommended to have a check digit if possible.Code 128Code 128 is also alphanumerical, but has a higher density thanCode 39. Code 128 character comprises three bars and threespaces. Code 128 encodes the full ASCII 128 character set, andhas 107 different printed characters. Each character can haveone of three different meanings, depending on which subsetof characters being used initially. Subset A, Subset B and SubsetC are the three different subsets.Prefix/suffixPrefixes/suffixes are a fixed group of characters that can appearon a barcode. Prefixes are available before the variable numbersor suffix after the variable numbers. e.g. “NU” in a 10 digitnumeric code counting up from start number NU00000001.The prefix might help in identifying different companies orseries of data.ANSI-Grade scaleWith the three mentioned codes, we follow the standardizedANSI X3.182- 1990 guideline (Barcode Print Quality-Guideline) (ANSI = American National Standard Institute).Barcoded platesWhen you require barcoded MicroWell plates, we can offertwo different solutions: Nunc standard products and Nunccustom barcode plates. On standard barcoded Nunc plates, a seven-digit Code 39alphanumeric label is applied to the short left side of the plate. On customized barcoded plates, we offer Code 128, Code 39and Interleaved 2 of 5.You have the flexibility to choose:• The number of digits• Code type• Numerical or alphanumerical• Label placement (one, two, three or all four sides)• Prefix or SuffixFor further information and to download the barcoded platerequest, please look at the barcode section atwww.nuncbrand.com, or contact Nunc Brand directly atbarcode.nunc@thermofisher.com.Barcoded CryoTubesBarcodes can be placed on CryoTubes in two different ways:Pad-print/Ink JetThis is done by printing directly on the CryoTube. First a whitebackground is pad-printed, then the ink jet technique is used toprint the black codes on the white background. These codes canwithstand the temperature fluctuations that a CryoTube wouldbe exposed to in freezing liquid nitrogen and the followingdefrosting.LabelThis solution is unique because the codes can withstandmost chemicals, e.g. toluene, acetone and DMSO. Like thepad-printed version, these codes can withstand temperaturefluctuations, freezing in liquid nitrogen and the followingdefrosting.
