PäR-HENRIk SjöSTRöM Managing director Hans Sundqvist at Turku Repair Yard foresees a long-term growth trend in the demand of ship repair services in the Baltic Sea area. Jobs generated by growing The long-term growth trend within oil and bulk shipments in the Baltic Sea generates more vessel traffic. Turku Repair Yard counts on this development to have a positive impact on their workload. The Estonian BLRT Grupp AS bought Turku Repair Yard Ltd in the summer 2007. Thus, the company substantially expanded its repair capacity in the Baltic Sea area by acquiring a shipyard equipped for repairs of large vessels. The dry dock is 265 metres long and 70 metres wide, and in addition to this Turku Repair Yard has a floating dock with 4,000 tons of lifting capacity. Situated at Luonnonmaa in Naantali close to Turku, the plant is strategically positioned close to the busy sea lanes, where a growing number of vessels sail to and from the Russian ports. There are not many repair yards in the area with docking facilities suitable for aframax tankers and large bulk carriers. This year Turku Repair Yard has already had a couple of tankers from the Russian oil trade in the dry dock, and MD Sundqvist thinks that the number will grow with the traffic. “We are putting much effort in re-entering the Russian market after a break of almost two decades. We have employed a Russian-speaking project manager to take care of the Russian market. It is primarily within this sector that we intend to expand in the future.” According to MD Sundqvist a routine docking is nowadays far from routine. More and more work tends to be included in the hectic days at the shipyard.
