Rates and fi xtures week 50 Shortsea dry bulk market report Baltic. Baltic does not offer much hope presently with owners struggling in any position. The grain market is more or less nonexistent while any new steel order is bombarded with candidates. Again we see that ships below 2,000 dwt are fi nding some sort of employment while larger units are struggling very hard which clearly is refl ected in earning levels currently obtained in the market. Most ships are trading far below breakeven levels, and some operators have already taken some ships into semi layup, hoping that this will turn a collapsed market. Activity level: Slow Scandinavia. WC Norway has been quiet this week with very little spot activity seen. Most of the steel and aluminium industry has announced signifi cant drops in productions due to heavy fall in demand resulting in very little activity both in the spot market and in contractual nominations. Finally some signs of improved activity in the agri product and fi sh meal sector with several orders from Iceland and Continent to Norway in the 1,000–2,000 mt size this week giving a long awaited breath of fresh air to a battered freight market. Activity level: Slow UK/Continent. There has been very little happening on the Continent this week with almost no activity in the grain and scrap sector. New arrivals of ships from French Bay and Irish Sea has been adding to the problem, and owners know that their ships heading for ARAG will only be welcomed by tens of other ships awaiting orders.
