As yard no 154 was being built, she was<br />

chartered for eight years to Acergy (formerly<br />

Stolt Offshore), <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fshore service<br />

contractor.<br />

For Acergy’s expense, she has been fitted<br />

out for laying cable or flexible pipes<br />

through <strong>the</strong> central moonpool 7.2 meters<br />

wide.<br />

Kongsberg system<br />

The work dock extends to 2,500 square<br />

meters, fitted with a 400-ton crane and<br />

equipment for operating ROVs (remotelyoperated<br />

subsea vehicles).<br />

Below deck is a “carousel” device <strong>of</strong> 24<br />

meters diameter for storage <strong>of</strong> up to 3,700<br />

tons <strong>of</strong> cable or flex-pipe. There is accommodation<br />

for no less than 140 persons in<br />

<strong>the</strong> forward superstructure.<br />

Propulsion is diesel-electric, with a power<br />

pack <strong>of</strong> six MAN engines and six Siemens<br />

generators. The vessel is fitted with<br />

a Kamewa-Ulstein CPP propeller and two<br />

Ulstein Aquamaster Azimuth thrusters, as<br />

well as four bow thrusters. These are all<br />

controlled by <strong>the</strong> Kongsberg navigation<br />

and dynamic positioning system.<br />

Exhaust gas catalyst system<br />

The hull design is reported to <strong>of</strong>fer 30 per<br />

cent less resistance than a conventional<br />

hull shape. The particular Ulstein centrepropeller<br />

design also <strong>of</strong>fers improved<br />

steering and speed, coupled to better fueleconomy.<br />

The vessel meets <strong>the</strong> latest environmental<br />

criteria, and has an ice-class hull enabling<br />

her to operate in <strong>the</strong> Barents Sea and<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn North Sea. There is an exhaust<br />

gas catalyst system installed. The Skandi<br />

Acergy, followed by a good number <strong>of</strong> similar<br />

vessels, will be essential in developing<br />

oil fields in deeper waters.<br />
